Introduction: About Ubud
Stray away from the busy hotspots in Bali like Kuta and Canggu and you’ll be met with the magical town of Ubud in the uplands of Bali. If you’re looking for a much-needed detox from the regular routine of cocktails and late nights, and are aiming to experience a touch of culture then Ubud is highly recommended. Surrounded by panoramic views and a feeling of bliss plus serenity is the center of tall standing Hindu temples, traditional art, and dance.
Although Ubud is famous for painting Bali’s culture marvelously, it is also the beloved center of wellness and yoga. If you’re looking for yoga studios, holistic cafes, or the best yoga retreats in Bali, and spas then you won’t have any trouble finding them here. But, let’s move on to the million-dollar question, what should I do in Ubud?
- Sacred monkey Forest
If you’re a first-timer, then the monkey forest is a must! To enter you are required to pay a $7 fee but that’s nothing when you equate it to what you’re going to experience. Amongst the thick jungle and tall trees are hundred, upon thousands, of cheeky monkeys ready to make an impression. Alongside these adorable (yet sometimes frightening) creatures is a remarkable water temple that makes for a great photo spot. One thing is for sure, keep your valuables close, and don’t look the monkeys in the eyes!
- Seniman coffee
I love my coffee as much as the next person, which is why I live off of Seniman coffee when I’m in town. A cute cafe nestled in Ubud center that gives off pure local vibes. During my yoga retreat in Bali, I always stop by when I can for a sip. Seniman coffee is a leading specialty for coffee brands in Bali, my personal favorite is the original kopi susu, let me know what you think!
- Campuhan ridge walk
Even if you’re on holiday, you still should aim to be active! Exercise is vital for our overall well-being.
One way I love to do this in Ubud is by taking a hike on the Campuhan Ridge walk. The distance of the walk is approximately 4 km (give or take) but is awarded by Ubud’s fresh air and panoramic hilltop views. But if you’re looking for a view leaning towards cascading rice paddy fields, like the many famous photos you see when you search up Bali, then don’t hesitate to visit Tegallalang rice terrace instead (or both!)
- Ubud palace
Also known as the Puri Saren palace, this free attraction symbolizes the start of Hinddhu culture in Ubud. It is the official residence of the Balinese royal family of Ubud, but it is open to tourists during the day. Every night the palace comes alive with the sound of Gamelan music as traditional Balinese dances are performed, you don’t want to miss the spectacular show!
- Yoga Retreat
As I’ve mentioned before, Ubud is the center of everything wellness, which calls for endless options of self healing retreat in Bali, yoga retreat in Bali, detox retreat in Bali, and even yoga teacher training! My personal favorite, and is a must-try, is a yoga retreat with Azadi retreat (oops too many repeated words!). Whether you’re on a short or long holiday, Azadi offers a number of options including 4 days, 8 days, and 11 days yoga retreats, suited for how long you stay.
We go on holiday for many reasons and one popular reason is to take a break from the everyday life we’re used to. Give you’re emotional and physical well-being a break by embarking on a time to practice yoga, eat for health, relax with massages, and fully immerse into the art of self-healing we all need. When a retreat center offers to take care of everything for you and for such an affordable fee, how can you resist?
Don’t get me wrong, there are endless options and you should not be limited to this list at all, you should experience everything Bali has to offer! Which one are you checking off first?
